Modern Fireplace Renovation

Our previous house was a historic 1929 bungalow. Now, it will be bricked almost to the ceiling with an arch above the fireplace. If you go with a traditional fireplace design then it is going to fit into almost any environment, but on ocassions you will need to do something a little bit more contemporary. If you have a fireplace mantel, replacing it with something a little different can have a major impact on your living room.

I really wanted to go in and paint the walls right away but figured the intelligent thing to do was prepare the fireplace for a reface first. If you have a real wood burning fireplace or wood stove, a hearth rug will protect your floor from falling embers. Also, this blue was antiqued and over-glazed several times to give it a texture of a wall that had been painted many times over the years.fireplace remodel

For this project, I wanted to surround the fireplace with stone (or manufactured stone), raise the fireplace to accommodate a hearth (instead of just tile on the floor) and add a new rustic wood mantle I had worked with manufactured stone before, but that was only a month ago when I added a fireplace to my basement.fireplace remodel

The stacked stone is by Eldorado Stone in the Chapel Hill finish, the fireplace is a Montigo L42 with a stainless steel frame, the customized mantel was built by JReal and a 55″ frame less ultra-thin Samsung TV was hung above the mantel. A few coats of wipe-on polyurethane and we have the shelves ready to go in. Now we just have to finish the walls.

Once we have the pieces cut we then need to square the sides to the window casing. We chose a field stone with various colors from Sunset Stone and in order to get all the pieces to fit into this giant puzzle, I went out into the garage and used some of the kid’s sidewalk chalk to draw out the areas we needed to cover with stone.fireplace remodel
