Our previous house was a historic 1929 bungalow. The white washed walls are finished. The three back-band pieces are glued and nailed together, I then joined the front mantle to the side pieces with a biscuit and glue. This room is a welcoming and contemporary space, where the fireplace is not the main focus , but cleverly placed as the divider in the living area. I’ve enlarged the floor to 8′ 6″ wide and insulated the short walls with fiberglass and foil foamboard insulation.
Luckily there are small changes (like switching out light bulbs) and big changes (like installing a new fireplace mantel ) that can give your living room a new look and won’t turn into a major DIY project, or turn your home into a construction …
Our last blog post was about the first step in our sunroom remodeling project: Painting Once we put new paint on the walls and ceiling, it was clear that something needed to be done with the fireplace. Home Depot and Lowe’s carry a great variety of trim and molding that you can piece together to make a beautiful fireplace design. A wood fireplace mantel is easy to install so you don’t have to hire a contractor. If you finish it and then mar the mantel when putting it up, you will have to repair it. Certainly many people paint or stain their fireplace mantel prior to installing it. It is really a personal preference.
The very finish of your fireplace tool set, wood holder, andirons and firebacks pull together your complete look. While it is not really necessary to finish a mantel after you install it, it does make the …
Our previous house was a historic 1929 bungalow. This has to be field cut and fitted to the return trim on the wall. Black adds drama to any space, and your windows are no different—black casements create contrast in a space and will accompany an array of colors beautifully. Originally a painted brick fireplace with original cabinets on the side.
So since I have several rooms with wood on the ceiling and walls, let’s panel the front wall with a little board and batten. I removed the cabinets to make it easier to work on the windows and stained glass was made by my friend Jules Mominee at Mominee Studios The design is a popular arts & crafts motif that I modified to fit my windows.

Our previous house was a historic 1929 bungalow. Now, it will be bricked almost to the ceiling with an arch above the fireplace. If you go with a traditional fireplace design then it is going to fit into almost any environment, but on ocassions you will need to do something a little bit more contemporary. If you have a fireplace mantel, replacing it with something a little different can have a major impact on your living room.
I really wanted to go in and paint the walls right away but figured the intelligent thing to do was prepare the fireplace for a reface first. If you have a real wood burning fireplace or wood stove, a hearth rug will protect your floor from falling embers. Also, this blue was antiqued and over-glazed several times to give it a texture of a wall that had been painted many times over the …
Our last blog post was about the first step in our sunroom remodeling project: Painting Once we put new paint on the walls and ceiling, it was clear that something needed to be done with the fireplace. I cut the front of the floor base down so I could attach the cut off piece on the bottom of the cabinet box for support. Whilst they don’t provide the same warmth as other fireplace options such as stone, they look great in a rustic environment and add an element of design.
I used thinset to attach hardibacker with tapcon screws over the uneven brick surface and ran two air lines for the direct vent fireplace and put a new cap on the chimney, ran a new electrical line to the right side of the fire box and had new gas lines with a code approved floor shut off added.
But the …

Whether painting or staining I have put together a list of tips below to help homeowners finish their new fireplace mantels. Outdoor fireplaces are quite different than those designed for the interior. Nearing the home stretch… I made a new solid wood mantel the same way I made the mantel for the basement fireplace.
Because I was installing the stone inside the house, I didn’t need to put up a vapor barrier and could put the metal lathe directly on the drywall after patching it. Metal lathe is nasty, nasty stuff and will cut you in half if you are not careful. I used a router to add some detail to the top and then cut the three pieces.

The fireplace on the main level of our house should be a beautiful focal point of the living area, but it was…. As the shingles are more of an accent, we put them on the upper dormer, chose a medium blue to paint the brick on the bottom, selected a creamy yellow siding, and kept the trim white so the colors popped. A flat paint would not have done justice to the ceiling and all the hard work we put into re-finishing it.
