Our last blog post was about the first step in our sunroom remodeling project: Painting Once we put new paint on the walls and ceiling, it was clear that something needed to be done with the fireplace. The walls were drywalled and new windows added on either side of the fireplace. These are insulated units that don’t open, as stained glass windows go here to block the scenic view of the brick wall. Carol Agee is the vice president of Agee Woodworks which has been building quality custom fireplace mantels for 10 years.
Additional pieces of marble were placed in the sunroom bookcase windows. Wuensch Construction did this by removing the wing walls in front of the existing shower and removing the dropped soffits over the existing shower and tub. The shutters on the side of the house were custom-stained to work with the shingle color and front door color, then we added a bit of burgundy and red as an accent to the side metal roof, cushions on the porch and flowers.
The traditional fireplace was completely demolished and replaced with a modern design, which consists of floor-to-ceiling veneer stacked stone and a linear fireplace with glass stones. If you have more than one fireplace mantel in your home, you can choose to focus on different time periods for each one.
Many people purchase an unfinished fireplace mantel so they can paint or stain it to match the décor of their home rather than having the factory paint or stain it one of their standard colors. Once we had the fireplace completely resurfaced, it was time to add trim and molding pieces to design the fireplace the way we wanted it to look.
The very finish of your fireplace tool set, wood holder, andirons and firebacks pull together your complete look. While it is not really necessary to finish a mantel after you install it, it does make the job easier if you do this while it is on the wall; it is similar to painting any other wood trim.
